Farlows - The Heyworth, 3 1/2" Silent Check Fly Reel

For sale here is a scarce Farlow's "The Heyworth" 3 1/2" silent check reel in very good used condition. The Heyworth was an early silent check design that utilized a bent spring to bear on a non-circular spindle base. The tension is adjusted by a rim mounted tensioner, and the reel is mechanically tight. Considered a silent check reel, but there is a muted click sound at maximum tension. Plate-wind design with semi-ported spool, smooth brass foot and leaded finish. The finish has faded to an uneven gray patina, and the winding plate has a nickel silver counterbalance that appears to be a later addition. Erinoid handle spins freely, and one end of the brass foot has been neatly filed. The resistance is essentially neutral, and the reel could be comfortably fished RHW or LHW. Weight is 7.92oz. An interesting pre-WWII offering from Farlow's, and it seems that not many were ever made.
