For sale here is an 8' 2-piece / 2-tip 6wt, model 221 F.T. (Fast Taper) bamboo rod made by Everett Garrison. Serial # P-8-1, the rod is in excellent+ original condition. Made in 1972 for noted angler, bibliophile, and former president of the New York Angler's Club Carl Otto Kretzschmar Von Kienbusch. C.O. Kienbusch introduced Mr. Garrison to the Angler's Club in the 1930’s and remained a friend & champion of Garrison's work for the rest of his life. The rod consists of pumpkin toned cane with resorcinol glue lines, bronzed snake guides with hard chrome stripping guide. The wraps are transparent with dark brown at the ferrules and winding check. The tips are wrapped green & red to permit the disciplined rotation of each tip. The ferrules fit perfectly, and one tip has the unusual feature of a central divot machined out of the base of the male slide. C.O. v Kienbusch was blind for the last 12 years of his life, and this rod was produced only a few years before he passed. Possibly the divot was a device by which he could differentiate the tips? The rod is also fitted with an all-cork grip & reel seat with nickel silver pocketed butt cap (pinned) and knurled aluminum slide band. The sections are straight, full length & serialized. "C.O. v Kienbusch" is also inked on the butt section. The finish is in excellent shape except for one small (~1.5mm) chip on one tip, just above the ferrule. It’s tiny, and worth noting, but does not need to be addressed. The tube cap is a later addition by Hoagy Carmichael and the stated weight (4 1/4oz) is slightly less than the actual weight (4 1/2 oz). A strong 6wt with medium fast action. Carmichael confirms in a letter of provenance that this taper was made specifically for Mr. Kienbusch. I cannot find another example; it is highly likely this is the singular example of the "221 F.T." taper. Made towards the end of Mr. Kienbusch's life, it's probable the rod was lawn cast only while owned by him. The rod has changed hands a few times since then, though each subsequent custodian has cared for the rod with the respect it deserves. I have cast it, and the rod handles a DT6 with sublime authority. Packed in the original khaki bag with tethered ferrule plug, and the original aluminum tube with brass collar and engraved aluminum cap made by Mr. Carmichael. A dossier of provenance will accompany the sale, including copies of Graham Turner's "Fishing Tackle - A Collectors Guide" and the January 2004 Lang's auction catalog, both of which include auction listings where this rod was sold. The binder includes correspondences between a previous owner and Hoagy Carmichael, various photos and emails concerning the rod, and scans of background publications by & about Garrison and Kienbusch. A rare opportunity to own an excellent, original, and probably unique Garrison rod.
