Sold Out
For sale here is an early 8' 2/2 4wt Payne bamboo rod in excellent restored condition. A very early Jim Payne rod, likely a model 102, dating to the early 1920's (+/-). Medium tempered cane with high twist snake guides, red agate stripping guide and patent date tip tops. Color preserved chestnut windings with golden yellow tipping and royal purple accents. The rod sports full intermediate wraps and decorative signature wraps at the ferrules and hook keeper. All sections are straight and full length. Bright finished 13/64 pot-belly ferrules fit perfectly, and the female is fitted with what appears to be an original top-hat ferrule plug. Strap & ring hook keeper, 5.5" cork grip and cap & ring reel seat over Spanish cedar spacer. The reel seat hardware is bright, and the butt cap bears the early Payne roll stamp. Weight is 3.63oz. Medium action, best with a DT4. Restoration was performed by Steve Blake who kept the wraps intact. The rod is in remarkable condition, and I suspect it may have been fully or partially restored at the Payne shop long before it ended up on Steve Blake's bench. It's hard to say for certain. One thing is for sure, these very early Payne trout rods rarely come up for sale, and this is a particularly attractive one. Sold in what appears to be the original bag and period-correct brass capped tube. A copy of Mr. Blake’s restoration notes will be included with the sale.
