For sale here is an incredible Thomas & Thomas Sans Pareil companion rod. 2 butts & 2 tips, making either a 9' 2pc 5wt or 7'6" 2-pc 5wt. The 'Sans Pareil' moniker refers to custom rods made by T&T at this time, and undoubtedly very few of these companion rods were made (I haven't been able to locate another). The rods feature medium wheatstraw colored cane with 3-up nodes and oxidized guides wrapped transparent tan with dark red tipping. Blued ferrules fit perfectly, and the serrations are overwrapped dark brown. All sections are straight, full length and serialized (#2846). Tom Maxwell's distinctive script graces all sections, and the original owner's initials are written on the butts. The 9' butt has a 7" grip with bright screw lock reel seat over mortised spacer, the 7'6" butt is fitted with a 5.75" grip that tapers into the wood spacer with blued cap & ring. Nickel silver checks are knurled and blued, and the cork is clean & smooth on both rods. The weights are 5.36oz and 4.20oz respectively. Both rods are medium fast action with strongly swelled butts (the 9 footer is more on the medium side of medium fast). Both prefer a DT5. Designing an effective companion rod is no small feat, but this T&T is very well done. Each configuration has its own distinct character, and I can immediately envision fishing situations for both rods while casting them. A beautiful and extremely rare offering from the early days at Thomas & Thomas. Sold in the original partition bag with stiffener and Champion style tube.
