Paul H. Young - 9' 2/2 8/9wt Bamboo Rod

For sale here is a Paul Young 9' 2/2, 8-9wt bamboo rod in very good condition. Mottled flamed cane with bright guides wrapped in color preserved gold thread. All sections are straight and full length, and the 18/64 Super-Z ferrules fit perfectly. 3x3 node spacing on the butt & one tip, 2x2 nodes on the other. One tip has slightly longer thread wraps at the ferrule and tip top, and several of the guide wraps line up very closely, but not perfectly. 7.5" cork grip and the rod is fitted with a Japanned down-locking reel seat with blued nickel silver butt cap. The cork grip and reel seat spacer show some soiling and light ridging. Weight is 6.81oz. There are 2 sets of script on the butt. Just above the grip reads "9' 6.25oz - 18/64 Fer. - 7/64 T.T." and then between wind-away signature wraps reads "M.E. Sheppard - Detroit, Mich. - Feb. 1 1953". The rod data script looks like Paul Young's handwriting, but the rest of the script doesn't match any employee of the PHY rod company with which I am familiar. It's possible the script was added later and lightly varnished over. The inconsistency in the thread wraps and the unknown handwriting are a bit of a head-scratcher. I can't say for certain if the rod was re-finished, but I lean towards saying the wraps & varnish are all original. The action is medium-fast and authoritative with a WF9. No model/taper is indicated, but it's an interesting big-game rod from PHY. Sold in the original bag and replacement tube.
