For sale here is a Payne Model 204, 8'6" 3-piece / 2-tip 5wt bamboo rod in very good used condition. A 1920's/1930's rod, featuring medium tempered cane with agate stripping guide and oxidized snake guides, wrapped in dark brown windings with gold and maroon accents. The rod appears to have received an older refinishing and a more recent overcoat of varnish. The waisted "pot belly" ferrules have been re-blued, and the butt ferrule is a Payne replacement from a later era (non-waisted). The ferrule fits are perfect and all sections are straight & full length. Strap & ring hook keeper over 5.5" cigar grip (3/8" rings). The grip is clean and smooth. Cap & ring reel seat with mortised Spanish cedar spacer. The rod weighs 4.25oz and the action is on the slower side of medium. I like it best with a 5wt line, though it handles a WF4 as well, particularly for casts longer than 40'. A very nice refinished example, the only things that stand out are the darker coloration on the butt ferrule and some water marks on the butt section, both purely cosmetic. A great early Payne ready to fish. Sold in the original tube (no label) and bag.
