Sold Out
For sale here is an incredible 8' 3/2 5wt bamboo rod made by Harold S. "Pinky" Gillum. An early rod (#505), originally owned by John Atherton, legendary artist, angler, and author of the book "The Fly and the Fish”. The rod recently received a partial restoration by Mark Canfield and has only been lawn cast since the work was completed. Every effort was made to maintain the intact original elements of this historic rod. Work performed includes a reset & rewrap of both female ferrules and one tip ferrule, rebluing of the ferrules and guides, along with a light overcoat to the original thread wraps. A few checks/chips to the varnish were addressed, and the mahogany reel seat spacer was masterfully refinished. The butt ferrule has two indentations as if from a gripping tool; an effort was made to smooth out these indentations and a purely preventative wrap of 6/0 transparent silk was applied between the thread wraps on the adjacent snake guide. The cane is darkly flamed with olive windings and dark tipping. Oxidized snake guides and Perfection stripping guide. Each section is straight, full length and serialized. Ferrules fit perfectly, and the butt is scripted "H.S. Gillum - Custom Built". 6" cork grip is slightly soiled and ridged with sparing cork filler, and the rod is fitted with a downlocking screw lock reel seat over walnut spacer. Medium fast, positive action, best with a DT or WF5 despite the Dyno label on the tube indicating a 6wt. A delightful Gillum trout rod, ready for service after the masterful work by Mr. Canfield. Sold in the original bag and brass capped tube. Accompanying the rod is a letter of provenance from Marty Keane, stating this was one of two Gillum rods owned and fished by John Atherton. From the collection of Thomas H. Clark.
